Meeting Open
Pres Hugo opened the meeting at 6.20 pm with the Rotary affirmation. He welcomed members and guests, Louis Yan from Rosebank College and Anshita Baijal from PLC Croydon, both NYSF attendees.
NYSF Attendee Presentations
Pres Hugo introduced the NYSF attendees who gave short presentations about their experiences.
Anshita from PLC Croydon described her trip to Canberra as an unforgettable experience. She enjoyed the lectures from university and industry professionals, learning about different STEM careers across Australia. She also participated in debates on real-world scenarios and ethical considerations. She expressed her gratitude to the Rotary Club of Burwood for sponsoring her attendance.
Louis Yan from Rosebank College also considered NYSF a great opportunity. He particularly valued the chance to see how different people approach situations, gaining a new perspective on STEM careers. He mentioned the opening ceremony, lectures on STEM careers, meetings with students from around Australia, and even a Zoom session with scientists at the Hadron Collider in Switzerland. He thanked the club for sponsoring his trip.
Both attendees expressed an interest in pursuing careers in medicine, but NYSF broadened their horizons to other scientific fields. Pres Hugo thanked them for sharing their experiences.
Upcoming Meetings and Events
A combined board meeting will be held on March 26th due to Pres Hugo's absence for the next month. PE Dennise suggests starting the meeting at 6:30 pm to accommodate non-board members as observers.
The Burwood Council BBQ at Burwood Safety Expo will be held this Saturday at 11:30 am in Burwood Park. Rain may affect the event, and the council will provide updates.
A communication from Concord Club regarding a cancer exercise program was received.
Past Events
PP Keith reported on the successful International Women's Day event organized by BPWS. Several club members were present, and the event featured great speakers and a good venue. Politicians were also in attendance, and Pres Janette was pleased with the outcome.
Project Update - RYDA
PRISCA has contacted Liam and Anna but is still waiting for a response regarding the venue and date for the RYDA event. The venue capacity is limited to 250 people if held at ACU.
Project Update - POW
The POW is tentatively scheduled for May 20th. Keith is organizing the menu. The cost may increase from $40 last year to $45 this year to cover expenses. Nominations are needed.
Other Business
Volunteers are needed for the BBQ this Saturday.
Keith received five tables donated by Bunnings. The club should express appreciation with a certificate.
Members are encouraged to read the Rotary Down Under magazine for interesting articles.
A new trailer is needed. Alf will inquire about options.
A card reader is needed for use at BBQs and functions.
PE Dennise Herrick reported on her experience at the District Conference in Wollongong. She plans to auction a koala named Charlotte, possibly at the POW night. She also has raffle prizes from Cambodia. Dennise will present on her Cambodia trip in the future.
Dennise suggested compiling information on all past club members.
Meeting Close
Changeover will be held on July 15th at Coro88.
Dennise proposes setting up a Google calendar for the club.
The next meeting is on March 25th. Board reports should be sent to Sec Peter before the meeting for email circulation.
The raffle raised $40.50, won by PP Keith. Sec Peter will bank the proceeds.
